Newpro's stupid ad
They've been showing this ad on cable lately for Newpro windows that totally rubs me the wrong way -- it shows this real-world couple who got Newpro windows for their house over the winter.
The wife lauds the windows, saying that the house was warmer the first night after the windows were installed. The husband mentions that he appreciated the lower heating bill.
"Gerry would notice that," his wife adds.
I guess the message here is that Gerry's wife is a vapid twit who's too much of a bubblehead to concern herself with boring stuff like paying bills.
I dunno if it was scripted or riffed off the cuff, but either way, it strikes me as a) stupid and b) sexist. But that's just me. Maybe everyone loves this ad.
At least they're not shilling using their kids or grandkids, unlike some of these obnoxious local low-class a-holes who sell furniture on TV.
Comments
In many financial relationships, there is often one who plays defense better than the other. It is common for the person who is not as good at defense to say that their partner is "obsessed with money."
That's how I understood your description of the ad. Not having seen it, I can see the dynamic they are going for. I don't think it is necessarily sexist.

The man in the ad is former Red Sox second baseman turned NESN broadcaster, Jerry Remy. The wife ("Hi, it's the Remys") is an age-appropriate, tan, anorexic-looking (bleached?) blonde. It's a strange ad, very different from the snob appeal of Pella and Andersen or Harvey's lame attempts at hipness. Considering that window replacement is a pretty big ticket item for a homeowner, it's surprising that Newpro thinks it works.
