My PowerBook is fux0red
Something really bad happened to the PowerBook I was talking about the other day -- it isn't booting consistently and trying to run it in FireWire Target Disk Mode makes it freeze up quickly. Disk utilities tell me the hardware is okay, though -- so I'm not sure what the problem is exactly.
I do have an old PowerBook hard drive -- a 2.5 inch ATA drive -- that I'm going to try to transplant, to see if it is indeed the hard drive that's causing the problem. If it is, then all I need is a new drive. If it isn't, then the PowerBook itself -- which went out of warranty some time ago -- is hosed.
Stay tuned for details.

Nah. Throw that old, 2004 G4 in the trash. Time to spring for your own Intel-powered MacTopProBookLapThingie and start catching up on all the Windows games that we've been missing out on.
My goodness, Peter. What has the world come to?

God, between Boot Camp and Katie Couric taking over CBS Evening News, the world has changed dramatically in 24 hours.

Before you throw it away (especially if you'd rather not spend the money on a new unit), back up the data, reformat it, and reinstall the OS from scratch. Migrate the data back, but move as few prefs as you can get away with.
I invest in AppleCare for my Powerbooks, both personal and work. The machines are just too friable for my taste. And for the work ones, well, it's a guarantee that at least half of the units in my care will end up needing a repair that more than pays for the cost of the Applecare contract. Users, gotta love 'em!
