I agree, Leander is missing the forest for the trees.
Bill Gates' philanthrophy may be well-intentioned, but it comes across as self-serving and insincere. After all, look at the company he keeps, and how many jobs he's offshored.
On the other hand, Steve Jobs - and his company - have a scrappy, iconoclastic, anti-establishment public image.
Jobs is a more authentic American role model than Bill Gates. He's more admirable because his example better reflects our core values, which I believe exist in spite of the current insanity in Washington, DC.
Put another way, can you possibly Jobs selecting Warren Buffet as a mentor?
