Not even a reacharound

So the Verizon story reached its final chapter, by the way -- I'm not getting DSL. I got a pre-recorded call on Friday announcing that upon further review, Verizon decided I'm not worth the effort after all.

The funny thing is, they decided to subscribe me to their broadband newsletter, which I got over the weekend. This morning I got a return address label for the hardware they sent me, along with a reminder that if they don't get it back I'll get dinged for $175 in equipment fees.

Fuckers.

Jezzus man, that sucks! In protest, I'm calling Verizon right now to cancel my DSL service...

...well, maybe after the holidays...

...unless I *really* need to use it...

...well, maybe I'll just send a nasty letter...

...although I wouldn't want them to take it the wrong way and cut off my service before I'm ready...

...listen man, I'm sorry about your DSL and all that, but you know how it is, I just can't get involved.

Guess Verizon's not getting your trade, are they, when you finally dump your lousy AT&T wireless service?

Bummer!

(Aghast) ...That. Is. Inhuman. Wow.

To paraphrase Ellen Feise, "That was... a bummer". How unprofessional of them.

In all fairness to Verizon, I called them this afternoon to discuss the issue, and spoke with a very nice and professional tech who apologized profusely for the FUBAR. She told me that my situation isn't entirely uncommon -- apparently the system that initially qualifies numbers for DSL uses information from the Central Office (CO) that sometimes turns out to be inaccurate. Apparently techs discover once they're out "at the pole" that some systems just can't handle DSL with any decent speed -- situations like that end up like mine, where they have to cancel the installation.

So, for now, I'm stuck with Comcast. Feh.

Damn, I hate to say this, but I think I told you so. Meanwhile, I've been happy surfing the web with my 2Mpbs/256kbps connection by Charter for only $29.99 + $60 for the modem.
