Amen. Good for Hyundai and J&J, though.
I find it hard to believe that there aren't at least 6 more deep-pocket US companies that want to promote disciplined, healthy role models for girls. How about HP and E-Bay, both headed by women CEOs?
Also, where was the publicity for this league? I'm a mass media junkie, and I never knew there was a franchise in Boston....
Kinda surprises me that you hadn't heard of them. Boston Breakers got pretty regular coverage on the local news channels during the regular season, and were often featured in local promotions. The team captain, Kristine Lilly, is pretty well-known among pro female soccer players.
Wrong demo, I guess, and that was part of the problem: the WUSA couldn't figure out who its audience was, sports fans or girls who like to play soccer. They made some stupid decisions, like hire a CEO who didn't know the sport, and broadcast games on PAX. It shouldn't have taken a marketing genius to parlay Brandi Chastain and her shirt into a profit-making franchise, but, oh, well, live and learn.....
