Where's Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf?
This is the sort of idea that, if I had any artistic and programming talent, I'd do myself: A "Where's Waldo?" style Shockwave or Java-based game featuring everyone's favorite Minister of Propaganda, Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf.
Just imagine the comic possibilities of trying to find al-Sahaf amidst an animated collection of former Republican Guard soldiers walking home after surrendering. Or in a group of Fedayeen Saddam who have diguised themselves as Bedouin to try to evade the advancing "coalition" forces.
"No, I am not here! It is a lie perpetrated by Western gangsters!"
"You can try to find me but the people of Iraq will rise up and ... um ... beat you with their shoes!"
Comments
Hi!
I'm from Portugal, a country which fortunately enjoys an immensely greater freedom of the press than the USA - a truth that has been made glaringly obvious during the Invasion of Iraq, in which the US media coverage of the war sunk to Soviet levels.
My point about al-Sahaf is: is it even conceivable that the discourse of the official spokesman of a country at war could be other than to proclaim victory at all times? Are you all suggesting that if the war turned out badly for the "coallition", the Pentagon spokesdrones would be informing us faithfully of US defeats in the field?
What you don't realize is that, by making fun of al-Sahaf, you're just showing to the world the obscene spectacle of racist minds at work.
And, hey: how many times did the "coallition" forces capture Basra? How many dozen top iraqui generals surrendered in the first week of war? How many times WMDs were discovered? Etc., etc.
One last thing: living in a free country, and having followed the Invasion of Iraq with much interest, I got to know, by watching TV in the comfort of my living room, the true Private Lynch story - and, I tell you, it is very, very different than the cheap propaganda you're beeing fed...
I may reveal reveal here the true "Saving Private Lynch" story, but only if you ask me nicely - for all I care, you anglos may live with your pathetic brainwashed brains for the rest of your lives.
Take care, Disneyworlders.

You're welcome to lay whatever spin you want.
If you're expecting me to ask anything of you nicely after suggesting that I'm a racist and calling me a "Disneyworlder," whatever the fuck that's supposed to mean, I'm inclined to tell you to shove it up your ass.

To the person in portugal
OH MY GOD!!! Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf is in Portugal!!!
I'm humbled to read a message from someone in contact with God. Because at this point that's the only way someone could tell their media NEVER tells anything but the absolute true. Free press sometimes rushes to get the story out first. A really free person learns to listen to more than one source.
Us anglos? Cut me some slack. Who's being rasist? No no has said anything about his ancestry. Only about his almost comical propaganda. Even you will have to admit that Al-Zazirra isn't "a freind" of the "Coalition". Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf said"I blame Al-Jazeera - they are marketing for the Americans!"
Anyway I sure do hope he gets his own comedy show when this is all over.
Here's a site with some of his better quotes
http://www.welovetheiraqiinformationminister.com/
"We made them drink poison last night and Saddam Hussein's soldiers and his great forces gave the Americans a lesson which will not be forgotten by history. Truly."Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf, Iraqi Minister of Information. (In away he's right)

Hola,
Please tell me "the true 'Saving Private Lynch' story". And as a Spanish speaking German living in Texas, let me tell you that 30% of the people here are Hispanic, and that their portion of the population grows every day, so don't assume all the U.S. is "Gringos"! ;-)

"What you don't realize is that, by making fun of al-Sahaf, you're just showing to the world the obscene spectacle of racist minds at work."
You mean making fun of someone is inherently racist?
Remind me never to go to Portugal...
See you later, corky.

One of the classic traits of a true warrior is that he respect his enemy. Americans now days think that just because they are declaring war on a country that the enemy soldiers are fools, cowards, inherently evil or unhuman. Therefore, you cannot respect the enemy at all. This is foolish. The Iraqi information minister has a thousand times the Personality of Meyers or that Centcom Briefer. The US lies as much as the Iraqis, but the Iraqi does it in style. As to freedom of press. More and more, antiwar is seen in the US as "anti-american." Opposition to particular politicians or policy is now seen as treason.

Hi there
I tend to agree with the person from Portugal..
I think that most of what he is saying is right.
As far as the "kiss my ass" comments from Mr. Peter Cohen, then this clearly reflects the typical American mentality and proves some of the points that the person from Portugal was making.
I think that the world would be a much safer palce without US invasions of other countries.
Posted by: David Coen from the UK | April 14, 2003 11:03 AM
David Coen from the UK:
You're missing the point. Just because I'm taking the piss of Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf doesn't make me a racist.
The anonymous Portuguese person's comments don't prove jack-shit except that he's coming across every bit as xenophobic and narrow-minded as he's accusing Americans of being.
There's this instant, knee-jerk reaction I've seen both here in the States and abroad to categorize everyone and everything. It's human behavior, and like a lot of human behavior, it's petty, worthless crap: French drink stinky wine and eat stinky cheese. Mexicans are lazy. Germans are all Nazis. British have bad teeth. Americans are fat and ignorant. Muslims are terrorists. Asians are good at math. And so on.
Deduction of a general state of being from the casual observation of individuals is, by its very nature, inaccurate.
So get off your high horse, David Coen from the UK. Me telling the anonymous portuguese person to kiss my ass isn't an indictment of the US, and it's shameful for either of you to try to make it an international incident.

Yo, home boy from Portugal! I live in what could be called the Bush family's home town, Houston, and I'm African-American as are over a third of the people in this city. About another third of the people are Hispanic, so Anglos are the minority here. If anyone is racist and uninformed, it someone who thinks all the people here should be called Anglos. We are a multi-ethnic and multi-racial society and Anglos will soon be a minority of the people in the entire U.S. If anyone looks to be living in a white folk's fantasy Disney World, it's you!

I feel the need to tell you that many devout Muslims have also seen the funny side of al-Sahhaf's eccentric ways.
From the dailytelegraph.co.uk
"He makes me smile," said Essam al-Erian, a leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's largest Islamic group. "Mohammed Sahhaf is the joke of the war."
Posted by: Muh' | April 14, 2003 05:39 PM
And from, http://www.wired.com/news/culture/0,1284,58452-2,00.html it is said the we Arabs were the first to see that Al-Sahaf was amusing, perhaps by design:
"Al-Sahaf's brand of humor may have caught on in the Arab world first. While a lot of western commentators took his absurd pronouncements at face value, Faisal Salman, an editor of the Lebanese As-Safir newspaper, wrote that Arab TV viewers 'are eager to listen to his funny words.'"
Posted by: Muh' | April 14, 2003 05:52 PM
Mr Cohen, I think that your knee-jerk comments were clever, but direction taken by an 'elected' official in a democratic society doesn't fall into your 'casual observation' category. cheers

Let's be realistic, I could sit all of you in one room, make you all watch the same exact coverage of the war, and each and everyone of you would make your own interpretation of what you had witnessed. So be it! War is not pretty, nor is it kind, but the fact of the matter is, lives are being lost on both sides of the fence. Propaganda can be positive or negative, it's just a matter of who's truly ahead at the time. And anyone can write comments about their opinion, whether or not they really know what the hell is going on enough to make an educated comment is what truly makes the difference. There is intolerance all over the world among many different races, but if the iraqi people have been treated badly under Sadaam's regime, then I pray for their freedom and safety, and even if America is wrong, I still pray that something good will happen for the Iraqi people. I am an American born and raised, but just think, Iraqi people were not allowed to speak out against their government, but yet all of you have the freedom to express your views as you did on this page. Hopefully the Iraqi people will be able to disagree openly in the near future when they think they are being mistreated. Who cares where al-Sahaf is, for those of you who love him, may he be safe, for those of you who don't, he will one day answer to his creator. Until then, whatever your religion may be, may you keep your faith and be blessed. Tammy, Florida USA

The most important task for u.s. media is to lie to it's own people. It sickens me to see that even the other countries are bying the same propaganda.
U.S. is behaving pretty much the way like roman slave masters in regards of the rest of the world. You should see some of the documentaries about it. The freedom that U.S. is dictating to others is soon directly measurable by the length of chain you are carrying.
hope al-sahaf is ok, may the colonists cowards fail!

I consider it would be a great shame were the rumours that Al-Sahaf has committed suicide true. I consider that he would have been a great candidate for British Politics. His ability to be economical with the truth would have indeed been an asset in such a career.
Posted by: JohnCarlsson | April 17, 2003 03:51 AM
It's al very well making light of the comments and statements made by Mohamed Saeed Al-Sahaf, but the fact of the matter is clear, if he had NOT made such statements then the Iraqis that continued to fight BECAUSE they believed him would have given up earlier and therefore there would have beel less death on the whole. If the man is indeed still alive and has not commited suicide by hanging, then he should indeed be hung for his crimes of inciting his people to fight and die in the face of impossible odds.
If on the other hand he is dead, then he should rott in hell.

the bullshit talk about freeing the Iraqi People is horseshit.. and the biggest lie ever... Israel has been planted in the ARAB WORLD since 1948... There are more than 100 UN Resolutions against this regime of terrorists led by Sharon.. Has anyone including the American or the Brits managed for a minute to say they asre terrorists though they have been killing the Palestinians for more than 50 years.... ( The original and rightful owners of Palestine)... has American managed to have THE UN to go inside the Hebrew State and check the HUNDREDS OF NUCLEAR BOMBS IT HAS...
We live in a world opf Hipocracy where right is wrong and wrong is right.... Your sickness will never stop.. and our resistance will never end..

I think Sahaf didn't lie at all up to the last two days of the war. Actually, the other side was telling all the lies. When Sahaf said Basra, etc.. was under "our" control he was teliing the truth. Remember, Basra fell under British control after Bagdad did. Also, the Centcom admitted that a rocket was launched into Kuwait from the Fao area which is almost at the border with Kuwait, and that happened just a couple of days before the end of the war. Sahaf excaggarated all the time but didn't say anything that is completely wrong like the coalition did. However, during the last couple of days we started hearing unbelieveable lies from Sahaf. Why? I think it is because the iraqis were preparing to flee Bagdad (after they have struck a deal with the americans, of course).
So I think that Sahaf is still alive, but the bad news is that this means Saddam is still alive too.
As to my political stand, I don't have any nice feeling for Sahaf as he is part of a terrible regime. But he was funney. Actually he wasn't even a lier, cause even when he lied he did it in such a way that it was obvious he didn't believe himself, nor did he expect others to belive it either. It was like a game for him. I prefer him to the american/british liers who lie and present a face of sobriety and honesty. Sahaf wasn't a hypocrite as are/were the americans/british. But that doesn't mean I like him. I really believe he will roast in hell.
