iPhone OS 3.1 problems with my 3G

I’ve been tweeting on and off for the past week about problems that I’m having with my iPhone 3G, now about 10 months old, and iPhone OS 3.1. It seems to be one of the less stable OS releases for me, and I’m having trouble figuring out exactly what the problem is.

What I do know is that with fair regularity, I need to “hard reset” my iPhone about once per day. That is, the screen goes black and the device remains unresponsive to touch, and I have to hold down the Home button and depress the sleep/wake button until the unit reboots, displaying the Apple logo. Then it’s fine until the next time it happens.

The first time I tweeted about this, I received a number of responses from Twitter followers who said the same thing happened to them, and some of them pointed to links on Apple’s own Web site discussion boards from other users who are reporting the same issue. So I know I’m not alone.

To try to fix the problem, I’ve restored the iPhone with a fresh copy of 3.1, but that hasn’t fixed it. I’m running only a handful of applications at this point — nine games and perhaps 13 other apps, in addition to the “built-in” ones that Apple includes. While that may sound excessive to some, it’s comparatively few, especially considering how many are actually in my library — and the total number takes up a relatively small amount of the device’s overall storage capacity — most of the 3G’s storage is being used for music.

When the problem happens, I’m not usually running an app or anything — the phone is usually idle. My only indication that there’s a problem is that all of a sudden my phone won’t work the next time I go to use it. If I have a Bluetooth headset synced, I’ll hear a beep from the headset to let me know the iPhone has disconnected, too.

  1. I had weird problems when I installed 3.1 as an upgrade (lockups, etc.) so I did a full wipe, and it behaved normally…until I installed the MMS update and found I couldn’t launch any add-on apps. Wiped again, worked fine.

But for the last few weeks, I’ve noticed that the Auto-Brightness setting wasn’t working. I took my phone to the Apple store last night and they replaced it due to it having a bad system board.

I heard from one of the Geniuses that they’ve replaced lots of phones since 3.1 for a variety of reasons. One was of the opinion that 3.1 may not have been fully baked.

I recommend giving up on that phone and going in for a swap.

  2. What fixed it for me (and it sounds like you’ve alraedy done this) is wiping the phone and not restoring it from a backup. This is a PITA, I lost lots of unbacked up data, and frankly I wish I’d just tolerated the crashing.

I really hope OS 3.1.1 or 3.2 is coming soon.
